Bach Mai Hospital treats rising severe malaria cases

Bach Mai Hospital’s Institute of Tropical Medicine has reported a rise in severe malaria cases among individuals returning from Africa. These cases involve the P. falciparum parasite, the most dangerous species of malaria in humans.

One notable case involved a 32-year-old man who worked in Angola for a year before returning to Vietnam. After experiencing high fevers and chills, he was diagnosed with severe malaria, septic shock, kidney failure, and liver failure. He was transferred to Bach Mai Hospital due to a lack of specific treatment at local facilities and has since shown clinical improvement.

Another case involved a 23-year-old woman who had previously worked in Nigeria. She presented with symptoms including edema and red urine after returning to Vietnam. The hospital has also coordinated the emergency transport of Artesunate medication over 1,700 km to the Ho Chi Minh City Tropical Disease Hospital to ensure timely treatment for patients in need.
