Back pain management through activity and exercise

Medical experts advise against prolonged rest as the primary solution for common back pain. While it may be tempting to lie down, extended inactivity can lead to joint stiffness and muscle weakness, potentially slowing the recovery process. Instead, maintaining daily activities within a comfortable range is recommended.

Low-impact activities such as walking, swimming, yoga, and tai chi are suggested to help manage discomfort. Specific exercises like the cat-cow pose, cobra pose, torso twists, bridge pose, and the 'dead bug' can help maintain spinal mobility, strengthen core and gluteal muscles, and reduce pressure on the lumbar region.

Immediate medical attention is necessary if pain is accompanied by fever, follows a severe injury, or involves loss of bladder or bowel control. Other warning signs requiring a doctor's consultation include numbness, tingling, or weakness in the legs, or pain that intensifies and radiates down the limbs.
