France school year 2026: financial updates and costs

As the 2026 school year approaches, French families are navigating various financial shifts. The back-to-school allowance (ARS) has been revalorized and was distributed in mid-August to approximately 3 million families. Payments vary by child age, ranging from €426.87 for ages 6-10 to €466.02 for ages 15-18. Eligibility is determined by income ceilings based on 2024 tax data.

In a shift from previous years, the association Familles de France reports a decrease in the average cost of school supplies for sixth-grade students, falling to €180.80. This decline is largely driven by a drop in prices for sporting equipment, though stationery costs remain relatively stable.

Conversely, the cost of student life continues to rise. According to the UNEF union, the average monthly cost for students has increased, with a remaining balance of approximately €1,300 per month after aid.
