Backflip AI's CAD Copilot Converts 3D Scans to Editable Models

Backflip AI, a San‑Francisco‑based startup, has released its second AI model that turns 3D scans, STL and other mesh files into fully editable, parametric CAD models in minutes. The technology reduces the typical $1,500 per‑part reverse‑engineering cost to about $10, making it feasible for manufacturers to digitise virtually every component on a factory floor. The copilot is offered as an add‑on for Autodesk Fusion 360 and as a standalone web application, with free limited reconstructions and paid plans starting at $20 per month. Backflip AI, founded by CEO Greg Mark and backed by $30 million in funding since December 2024, targets the automotive and aerospace sectors, where digital part models are essential for prototyping and design. Early adopters include an unnamed automotive manufacturer that plans to digitise half of its parts by year‑end, with the goal of handling almost all parts soon.

The tool generates true CAD operations—such as extrusion and revolved features—rather than simple surface meshes, allowing rapid post‑processing and customization. Plug‑ins for additional CAD packages are slated for release later this year.
