Backnang railway sabotage suspected after cables are cut

Authorities in Germany are investigating suspected sabotage after unknown perpetrators cut multiple cables in a concrete shaft between Backnang and Maubach in Baden-Württemberg. The incident, which occurred on a Sunday afternoon, caused significant disruptions to train services, internet connectivity, and telephone networks in the region.

Police and the State Security Office (Staatsschutz) believe the damage was intentional rather than accidental. Investigators noted that the location, situated under a bridge in difficult-to-access terrain, suggests a targeted act. Evidence including tool marks and potential DNA samples has been secured at the scene. Deutsche Bahn confirmed that no construction work was being conducted in the area at the time, further supporting the theory of deliberate damage.

The cable cuts triggered technical errors in the railway signaling system, causing tracks to appear occupied and leading to train delays. While repairs were conducted overnight, the full extent of the communication outages and the total number of affected passengers remain under assessment.
