A24's 'Backrooms' Sets Global Box‑Office Record with $212 Million

The horror film Backrooms: Um Não-Lugar, directed by Kane Parsons and starring Chiwetel Ejiofor, Renate Reinsve, Mark Duplass and others, has become the highest‑grossing release in A24’s history. It has earned US$212.6 million worldwide, including US$135 million in the United States, after an opening weekend of US$81 million and a second‑weekend take of US$25.9 million despite a 70 % drop in daily ticket revenue.

The performance surpasses the previous A24 record held by Marty Supreme (US$191 million) and marks the biggest opening for an original horror title and for a first‑time director at the studio. A sequel to Backrooms: Um Não-Lugar is already in development.
