Backrooms film by Kane Parsons expands online horror universe

The feature film "Backrooms", released in theaters on May 29, was directed by Kane Parsons (known as Kane Pixels) and produced by A24. It adapts the internet horror concept that began with a viral 4chan post on May 12, 2019, and developed through Parsons’ analog‑horror YouTube series.

The movie places its story in a narrow June 1990 window, continuing the timeline established by the web series. It follows the disappearance of furniture‑store owner Clark and his therapist Mary after they step through an ordinary doorway into the endless yellow rooms, an event linked to the fictional Async Research Institute’s “Threshold” experiments that originated in the early 1980s.

By integrating the same visual motifs, dates and characters such as Async liaison Phil, the film is presented as an additional chapter rather than a reboot, allowing fans to locate the new footage within the existing lore while expanding the Backrooms mythology.
