Backrooms horror film tops US box office and slated for HBO Max streaming

The horror movie "Backrooms," directed by 20‑year‑old Kane Parsons, originated from a viral online meme and a YouTube short that amassed more than 20 million views. After expanding the concept into a feature, the film opened to strong box‑office numbers in the United States, with a crowded opening weekend.

Starring Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve, the story follows a group that discovers a bleak, endless space hidden behind a wall in a struggling furniture shop. Distributed by A24 through a deal with Warner Bros., the movie is expected to remain in theaters for at least 40 days before moving to streaming. When it does, it will be available on HBO Max, with a likely release window in late August or September.
