In the province of León, Spain, health authorities are monitoring an upward trend in bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Data from the National Epidemiological Surveillance Network (Renave) indicates approximately 140 new annual cases resulting from three key bacterial infections: 78 cases of chlamydia, over 30 cases of syphilis, and more than 30 cases of gonorrhea.
Chlamydia has become the most prevalent infection in the region, particularly among young people under the age of 25. The average age for diagnosis is 24 for women and approximately 28 for men. Additionally, the province reports between 25 and 30 new HIV diagnoses annually.
While León's rates remain lower than the Spanish national averages—where chlamydia exceeds 90 cases, gonorrhea 76, and syphilis 24 per 100,000 inhabitants—the steady growth in local consultations has raised concerns among health professionals.
