Garßen freight train leak causes hazardous material response and rail delays
Emergency services responded to a hazardous material leak from a freight train at Garßen station near Celle. A container on a freight wagon leaked a dark, viscous, and irritatingly smelling substance. While the exact substance could not be identified, container markings indicated highly flammable waste with general hazards. Firefighters wearing specialized protective suits sealed several small leaks. No injuries were reported, and there was no danger to the general public.
The incident caused significant disruptions to rail traffic, including the RE3 and RB31 regional lines between Uelzen and Hannover, necessitating replacement bus services.
In separate incidents, a catamaran collided with a harbor wall in Konstanz, resulting in twelve injuries, including the two skippers. Additionally, police launched a search operation on Lake Constance after discovering an abandoned blue and yellow inflatable boat with an electric outboard motor. No persons were found in the boat, and authorities have stated there are currently no indications of missing persons in the area.
