Serbia's Danube warship removal project gains EU funding
A severe heatwave has lowered the Danube’s water level, exposing dozens of World‑War‑II German warship wrecks near Prahovo in eastern Serbia. The wrecks, part of an estimated 200 vessels lying on the riverbed, have long obstructed commercial traffic and cost Serbia about €5 million a year in navigation delays.
The European Union, through the Western Balkans Investment Framework, has launched a project to remove the 21 most problematic wrecks. The European Investment Bank, a strategic partner, pledged €16 million to fund the clearance, with work expected to continue until 2028. Some wrecks may still contain unexploded ammunition, posing safety risks.
In the same low‑water conditions, researchers further upstream in Bulgaria’s Danube near Ruse uncovered the remains of a young woolly mammoth, adding a notable paleontological find to the region’s news.
