Bad Nauheim implements AI cameras to combat illegal waste disposal
The German town of Bad Nauheim has implemented AI-supported cameras, known as ‘wild waste flashers’ (Wildmüllblitzer), to combat illegal waste disposal. Developed by the company Celective, these cameras monitor sensitive locations and use artificial intelligence to detect illegal dumping activities.
When a potential violation is detected, the system saves the video sequence for municipal employees to review. If confirmed as illegal disposal, the perpetrator can face fines of up to 500 euros, in addition to the costs associated with cleaning up the waste. Mayor Klaus Kreß stated that the technology is a modern tool to hold violators accountable while remaining compliant with data protection regulations.
The town plans to expand the use of these smart-city technologies and aims to eventually enable direct data transfer to local law enforcement to catch offenders in the act.
