Bad Oeynhausen waste facility fire involves 800kg of batteries

A fire broke out at a waste disposal facility in Werste, Bad Oeynhausen, during the night of Saturday, October 11, 2026. Approximately 800 kilograms of old batteries were burning under a shed adjacent to a production hall.

Emergency responders deployed roughly 50 personnel to prevent the flames from spreading to the nearby building. Firefighters utilized breathing apparatus, C-pipes, and a water cannon from a tank fire truck to bring the blaze under control. Following the initial suppression, company employees used forklifts to move the affected containers, and a wheel loader was used to spread out the remaining batteries to uncover and extinguish any remaining hotspots.

The operation, led by City Fire Inspector Dominik Baake, lasted approximately 90 minutes. The site was handed back to the operator at 1:11 AM on Sunday morning.
