Bad Sachsa museum displays historical wooden hollow measure

The Wintersport- und Heimatmuseum Bad Sachsa features a historical wooden hollow measure, known regionally as a ‘Viertel-Metze’ or ‘Viertel-Merze’. This cylindrical, slightly conical vessel was crafted using cooperage techniques, consisting of individual wooden staves held together by two flat iron bands.

One of the staves is extended upward to serve as a stable, one-handed carrying handle. Such dry hollow measures were historically used in agriculture and trade to measure bulk goods, including grain, flour, seeds, and legumes. The object is believed to have been produced in the Schwäbe cooperage workshop during the second half of the 19th century or the beginning of the 20th century.
