Bad Waldsee hospice group hosts lecture on humor in end-of-life care

The Bad Waldsee hospice group hosted a well-attended lecture focused on the role of humor in end-of-life care. Udo Berenbrinker, a long-time instructor for health clowns, shared expertise on using cheerfulness to alleviate pain and reduce anxiety in patients.

During the presentation, health and hospice clown Jan Karpawitz demonstrated practical techniques, such as using wordplay, unexpected actions, or colorful fabrics to engage patients, including those with dementia or physical limitations. The session highlighted how a caregiver's positive expression can reach patients even when verbal communication is no longer possible.

Christian Schramm, chairman of the Bad Waldsee hospice group, noted that this specialized approach requires additional time. Currently, local facilities are supported by five additional nursing staff members employed by the hospice group, with funding provided through project resources until November 1.
