Baden-Württemberg and Deutsche Bahn dispute rail infrastructure funding

The state of Baden-Württemberg and Deutsche Bahn (DB) are in disagreement regarding the modernization of the Residenzbahn railway line between Karlsruhe and Stuttgart. The state government has invested approximately 8.5 million euros into the infrastructure, citing a lack of necessary funding from DB, despite the line being under federal responsibility. While the state argues that further action is needed to improve resilience against disruptions and extreme weather, Deutsche Bahn considers the current state of the infrastructure to be “beanstandungsfrei” (free of complaints), noting only a long-standing slow zone in Kleinsteinbach as a significant issue.

In a separate but related development regarding regional rail, the Stuttgart S-Bahn core tunnel is set to reopen following an eight-week closure. During this period, approximately 500 workers completed over 20 different measures, including replacing tracks, renewing switches and lines, and installing new technology for the Digital Node Stuttgart. The works included upgrading power supply components and installing new ceiling power rails to modernize the system.
