Baden-Württemberg declares emergency for organic farms due to drought

The Ministry of Agriculture in Baden-Württemberg has declared a state of emergency for organic farms due to a persistent drought. This declaration, made under European organic law, follows a severe shortage of organic roughage and field fodder.

As a result of the emergency status, organic farms are now permitted to purchase conventionally produced grassland and arable fodder. Farmers wishing to utilize this option must submit an application to the organic control authority at the Regierungspräsidium Karlsruhe.

Agriculture Minister Marion Gentges noted that the situation is serious, as many farmers have already been forced to feed through winter reserves that may not last until next spring. Proposed relief measures include releasing areas for fodder intermediate crops under the FAKT state funding program, temporarily using fallow land for fodder production, and investigating potential state subsidies for transport and procurement costs.
