German heat wave fuels record pool use, AC sales and health strain
A prolonged heat wave across Germany has pushed temperatures to 35‑38 °C in many regions. The German Weather Service (DWD) warned of severe thunderstorms, heavy rain and hail in several districts, while the fire services in Baden‑Württemberg responded to more than 50 storm‑related incidents without reported injuries. In western Rheinland‑Pfalz, a soil‑moisture monitor recorded severe drought conditions, threatening agriculture and groundwater.
The hot weather has driven a surge in outdoor recreation. The Deutsche Gesellschaft für das Badewesen expects a record summer for open‑air pools in North‑Rhine Westphalia, noting that many facilities are already full as families take advantage of the warm days.
Demand for cooling equipment has spiked. Market researcher NIQ reported that 387 000 mobile air‑conditioners were sold in the first half of 2026, a 130 % increase over the previous year, with many models now out of stock.
Health officials highlighted the human toll: an average of about 1 400 hospital treatments per year are linked to heat‑related conditions, with notable spikes in years of extreme heat, such as 2018 when an estimated 8 500 heat‑related deaths occurred.
Overall, the heat wave is affecting public safety, recreation, consumer markets and health services throughout Germany.
