Japanese beetle threat prompts preparations in Baden-Württemberg

Authorities in Baden-Württemberg are preparing protective measures following the appearance of the invasive Japanese beetle near Lake Constance. The small, metallic-green beetle poses a significant threat to agriculture, as it can consume more than 400 different plant species.

In the neighboring state of Bavaria, a large quarantine zone has already been established in the Lindau district, covering infestation areas and a five-kilometer buffer zone. Strict regulations are in place within these zones, including prohibitions on moving green waste, compost, or topsoil to prevent the accidental spread of eggs and larvae. So far, sixty Japanese beetles have been detected in the Lindau area during the current flight season.
