Baden-Württemberg reports 1.5 trillion euro turnover amid digitalization decline

Baden-Württemberg recorded a total turnover of 1.5 trillion euros in 2024, representing a 0.9 percent decrease compared to the previous year. The region's economic structure is characterized by a high concentration of wealth among large corporations; 141 companies generating over one billion euros in revenue accounted for 43.2 percent of all turnover. In contrast, approximately 359,000 smaller taxpayers with revenues under one million euros contributed only 4.9 percent to the total.

The manufacturing sector remains the strongest economic driver, accounting for 36.4 percent of total turnover with 561.7 billion euros. Despite the slight decline in total revenue, VAT advance payments to the treasury rose by 20.5 percent to 21.7 billion euros.

A new study by Allianz Industrie 4.0 Baden-Württemberg indicates that the region is no longer at the forefront of digitalization. The research, which compares Baden-Württemberg to other leading European industrial regions such as Lombardy, Catalonia, and North Brabant, examines the declining momentum in Industry 4.0 readiness. The study utilizes patent analysis and expert interviews to assess the competitiveness of the region's industrial value chain.
