Baden-Wurttemberg reports 358 underage marriages since 2012

Data from the Baden-Wurttemberg state government reveals that 358 cases of underage marriage have been recorded in the German state since 2012. Of these, only eight marriages have resulted in a formal annulment. The statistics, released in response to inquiries from the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, highlight several extreme cases, including an 11-year-old Iraqi girl married to a 17-year-old in 2020 and a 14-year-old Afghan girl married to a 30-year-old in 2018.

Since 2015, 350 such cases have been registered. The individuals involved include citizens from Syria, Iraq, and Pakistan, with Syrian citizens reportedly accounting for nearly 40% of the early marriages. In contrast, marriages between two German citizens represent only 0.3% of the recorded cases. The majority of the minors involved are girls.

The state government noted that there are currently no active legal proceedings to annul the marriages in question. Some cases remain unannulled due to bureaucratic reasons, such as the minor reaching adulthood before a decision is finalized, or the death of a partner.
