Baden-Württemberg tests automated scan vehicles for parking enforcement

The Ministry of Transport in Baden-Württemberg is testing a pilot project involving scan vehicles designed to automate the detection of parking violations. These vehicles are equipped with roof-mounted laser scan systems and integrated camera sensors that photograph license plates, locations, and timestamps while driving past parked cars.

The system automatically compares captured data against digital parking permits or resident parking passes. If a violation is detected, the information is forwarded to the relevant traffic authority. To protect privacy, the system immediately deletes data for vehicles parked legally and automatically pixelates any photographed individuals.

By scanning areas twice at intervals of several minutes, the technology can distinguish between brief stops and illegal parking. This digital approach is intended to complement existing manual inspections by local regulatory offices, aiming to increase the efficiency of enforcement and improve long-term road safety.
