Baden-Württemberg tests automated scanning vehicles for parking violations

The Ministry of Transport in Baden-Württemberg is conducting a pilot project using specialized scan vehicles to automate the detection of parking violations. These vehicles are equipped with roof-mounted laser scanning systems and integrated camera sensors that photograph parked cars while driving by.

The technology captures license plates, precise locations, and timestamps, automatically cross-referencing this data with digital parking permits or resident parking passes. If a violation is detected, the information is forwarded to the relevant traffic authority. If the vehicle is parked legally, the data is immediately deleted, and any photographed individuals are automatically pixelated.

By scanning areas twice at intervals of several minutes, the system can distinguish between short-term stops and actual parking violations. The goal of the project is to supplement existing manual inspections by local regulatory offices, making the detection of parking offenses more efficient and improving long-term road safety.
