Baden-Württemberg water levels remain critically low after drought

Despite recent thunderstorms and showers, water levels in Baden-Württemberg remain critically low. The Low Water Information Center (NIZ) reports that rivers, lakes, and groundwater continue to suffer from the effects of the region's hottest summer on record.

Data indicates that 44 percent of water levels are at an extremely low state, while 39 percent are classified as very low. Only 10 percent are considered moderately low. This shortage is attributed to months of insufficient rainfall; August saw an average of 63 mm of rain, significantly below the normal 95 mm.

Notable impacts include Lake Constance, where the level in Konstanz was recorded at 276 cm on September 1, which is 85 cm below the seasonal average and lower than the previous record low for that date in 2003. Additionally, the Rhine at Maxau was 147 cm below its long-term average. The German Weather Service (DWD) does not expect significant rainfall in the coming days, suggesting water levels may continue to fall.
