Baden‑Württemberg Hiker Rescued After Night in the Austrian Alps

A 72‑year‑old hiker from Ettlingen in Baden‑Württemberg fell on a steep, rocky slope in the Tyrolean Alps near the Bavarian border. He was missing for a day before rescuers, including police, fire crews, mountain rescue teams, search dogs and drones, located him at an elevation of about 2,200 m in a snowfield. Despite severe injuries, he survived the night in sub‑zero temperatures. A helicopter airlifted him to a clinic in Murnau, Bavaria, where he was treated.

The rescue operation was hampered by bad weather and fog, which delayed night searches. When conditions improved, a helicopter deployed multiple teams to the site on the following morning, enabling the successful extraction of the injured hiker.
