Badung Regency explores underground tunnel to ease Canggu traffic

The Badung Regency Government is exploring the construction of an underground tunnel to alleviate heavy traffic congestion along the Gatsu Barat–Kerobokan–Canggu corridor. This route faces significant pressure due to rapid growth in residential areas, economic activity, and the tourism sector.

During an audience with PT Pendar Cahaya Nusantara and Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Co. (Singapore) Pte Ltd (STECS), Badung Regent I Wayan Adi Arnawa discussed technical aspects, including the potential use of a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM). This technology is proposed to minimize surface disruptions and soil structure interference, which is critical for the densely populated and economically active Canggu area.

To manage the project's high costs and long-term implementation, the local government is considering a Public-Private Partnership (KPBU) scheme. The goal is to create a strategic infrastructure solution that can eventually be integrated with modern transportation modes while minimizing large-scale land intervention on the surface.
