BAE Systems short interest rises 51.5% amid analyst caution
BAE Systems has experienced a 51.5% surge in short interest during September, with shorted shares rising from 41,486 at the end of August to 62,843 by September 15. Despite this increase, short selling remains a negligible fraction of the company’s total outstanding shares, and the days-to-cover ratio is low at 0.2 days.
Market analysts maintain a cautious outlook on the defense contractor. The consensus rating is “Hold,” with several firms, including BNP Paribas Exane and Deutsche Bank, issuing neutral or hold ratings. While Kepler Capital Markets previously upgraded the stock to “buy,” the share price has recently traded below its 50-day and 200-day moving averages.
Despite recent technical weakness, BAE Systems maintains a record order backlog of £84 billion as of late June, bolstered by increased global defense spending and significant contracts such as the £5.9 billion UK government deal for Dreadnought nuclear deterrent submarines. The company reported a 9% rise in first-half sales to £15.8 billion and an 11% increase in underlying operating profit to £1.7 billion.
