UK commits £8.4bn to Dreadnought nuclear submarine programme
The British government announced an £8.4 billion investment to advance the Dreadnought‑class nuclear deterrent submarine programme. Prime Minister Andy Burnham, accompanied by Defence Secretary Wes Streeting, unveiled the funding during a visit to BAE Systems’ shipyard in Barrow‑in‑Furness.
A £5.9 billion contract was awarded to BAE Systems to build four new submarines, with the first vessel, HMS Dreadnought, slated to complete sea trials and enter service in the early 2030s. The programme is expected to support around 47 000 jobs and more than 6 000 suppliers across the United Kingdom, including roughly 30 000 direct positions and a target of 22 000 apprenticeships by 2035.
The investment forms part of a broader £63 billion defence spending plan over the next four years and aligns with the UK’s AUKUS partnership with Australia and the United States, aiming to replace the ageing Vanguard class and maintain the nation’s continuous nuclear deterrent.
