Baelo Claudia museum in Tarifa reopens after €1.3 million renovation

The archaeological museum of Baelo Claudia in Tarifa reopened to the public on Tuesday, 28 July, following a €1.3 million rehabilitation of the building and a complete overhaul of its exhibition narrative.

The new permanent display incorporates the most important discoveries made at the site over the past two decades, tracing the city’s history from its pre‑Roman origins through its funerary practices, garum industry, urban development, economy, religion and daily life. Highlights include the Doríforo of Baelo Claudia—a statue modelled on Polykleitos that showcases the spread of classical aesthetic ideals—and the original statue of Junia Rufina, presented within a recreated temple setting.

Modern lighting, bespoke supports and refreshed graphic resources link the objects to the excavated areas, while a flexible curatorial approach allows periodic rotation of artifacts as further excavations yield new material.
