Baelo Claudia Museum Reopens in Tarifa after €1.3 Million Renovation
The archaeological museum of Baelo Claudia in Tarifa has reopened following a comprehensive renovation costing about €1.3 million, funded by the Andalusian regional government. The works repaired the building designed by architect Guillermo Vázquez Consuegra, improving its watertightness, thermal insulation, energy efficiency and visitor safety.
The new museal layout introduces a flexible, modular exhibition system that can be updated as further discoveries are made. Highlights of the inaugural display include the Doríforo of Baelo Claudia and the original statue of Junia Rufina, both previously unseen by the public, as well as a temporary illustrated exhibition by Arturo Redondo. The museum now aims to rotate collections and offer a more dynamic, accessible experience for the over 100,000 annual visitors.
The reopening ceremony was attended by Javier Ros, sub‑delegate of the Andalusian Government in the Campo de Gibraltar, cultural delegate Tania Barcelona, and Tarifa mayor José Santos, who praised the project as a decisive step for the conservation and promotion of one of Andalusia’s most important Roman sites.
