Bafra Plain begins rice harvest across 165,000 decares
The rice harvest has commenced in the Bafra Plain, a major production hub in Turkey, covering approximately 165,000 decares of land. Producers reported a challenging planting season due to unusual weather conditions, specifically early night frosts that forced many to opt for early planting.
Despite these challenges, farmers expressed satisfaction with the quality of the crop. Yields vary by field, ranging from 300-400 kilograms per decare in some areas to 700-800 kilograms in others. Producers noted that rising costs for fertilizer and fuel remain significant burdens. The introduction of new combine harvester technology has been noted as a positive development, as it reportedly increases efficiency and prevents grain loss during the peeling and crushing processes.
Separately, the capia pepper harvest has also begun in the region. Samsun produces 98% of Turkey's capia peppers, with an expected annual production of 120,000 to 125,000 tons from 32,000 decares of land. This sector contributes approximately 4 billion TL to the local economy.
