Victoria retail shifts as Baggins Shoes closes and Muji expands
The retail landscape in Victoria, British Columbia, is seeing significant shifts as longtime businesses close and international brands expand.
Baggins Shoes, a local retailer established in 1969, has announced it will permanently cease operations before the end of 2026. The company, known for its extensive selection of Converse footwear, cited a challenging economic environment and changes in the owners' personal lives as reasons for the closure. After closing its physical storefront in 2024, the business had been operating as an online-only model. To mark its final chapter, the company is hosting a series of warehouse sales at its Wilson Street location.
In contrast, Japanese retailer Muji is expanding its presence in the region with a new location at the Mayfair Shopping Centre. The minimalist brand, which offers a wide range of household goods, clothing, and food, is currently hiring for various positions. This follows the recent arrival of another Japanese brand, Uniqlo, which opened a Victoria location last summer.
