Baghdad police chief killed in shooting during illegal housing crackdown

A deadly shooting occurred in the Dora district of southern Baghdad on Thursday during an operation to remove illegal housing structures and encroachments. The attack targeted municipal and security teams performing their duties under legal orders.

The incident resulted in the death of Brigadier General Hisham Mohammed Talla, the director of Baghdad Municipality Police for the Karkh side, and Commissioner Khaled Abbas Lafta. At least four other individuals, including municipal workers and a member of the federal forces, were wounded in the gunfire.

Security forces cordoned off the area and launched an intensive search for the suspects responsible for the attack. The Baghdad Municipality issued a statement condemning the “sinful attack,” asserting that such violence will not deter their efforts to maintain the city’s urban landscape and infrastructure projects.
