Bagnoregio residents protest renewable energy expansion
Over one hundred citizens, farmers, and local administrators gathered in Bagnoregio for a public assembly titled ‘Energy Transition Without Speculation in Tuscia’. The meeting, organized by a network of agricultural, environmental, and tourism associations, addressed concerns regarding the impact of wind turbines and solar panels on the local landscape.
Participants argued that rapid renewable energy development threatens the region's cultural, archaeological, and natural assets, which are vital to the local tourism economy. Representatives noted that the Viterbo province contributes over 80% of the Lazio region's electricity production from renewable sources.
Regional councilor Daniele Sabatini addressed the assembly, stating that a draft regional law regarding ‘suitable areas’ is being developed. He suggested that the efforts of Viterbo municipalities could lead to a ‘parameter zero’ status for the territory. While concerns were raised about delays in regional legislation compared to other Italian regions, officials maintained that the Lazio region has already met its renewable energy production targets, reducing the risk of state intervention.
