Bahía Blanca targets South American urea leadership via major investments

Bahía Blanca is positioned to become a major South American hub for nitrogenous fertilizers following significant investment projects. Pampa Energía’s fertilizer plant project has been officially included in Argentina’s Large Investment Incentive Regime (RIGI). This project involves a US$2.7 billion investment to construct a granulated urea plant at the Port of Ingeniero White, which is expected to be the largest of its kind globally.

The Pampa Energía facility aims for a production capacity of 2.1 million tons of urea per year by late 2029. The project is expected to generate over 4,800 jobs during the construction phase and approximately 300 permanent positions once operational. Economically, the initiative targets annual exports exceeding US$800 million, with Brazil identified as a primary market.

According to a report by the Bolsa de Cereales y Productos de Bahía Blanca, a second major project by Profertil aims to expand its capacity to 2.6 million tons annually. Together, these developments could bring Argentina’s total nitrogenous fertilizer production capacity to approximately 4.7 million tons per year, significantly reducing the need for imports and strengthening the regional market.
