Bahía de Cádiz salt marshes face restoration through regenerative aquaculture
Experts are proposing regenerative aquaculture as a solution to the environmental degradation of the salt marshes, salt pans, and estuaries within the Bahía de Cádiz Natural Park. Biologist Salvador Algarín has advocated for a model that seeks to recover degraded ecosystems through the sustainable use of natural resources and the revitalization of traditional activities. This approach aims to be environmentally effective, technically viable, and economically feasible.
Complementing these environmental efforts, the exhibition ‘Astutas. Salinas del siglo XXI’ is traveling to Aveiro, Portugal, as part of the ‘Mostra Espanha 2026’ initiative. Curated by Rocío Royo, the immersive exhibition explores the salt pans of the Bahía de Cádiz as living territories of innovation and sustainability. It highlights the intersection of traditional knowledge with biodiversity, research, and the blue economy, showcasing how these landscapes can support extensive aquaculture, oyster farming, and salicornia cultivation.
