Bahama Rock Limited proposes land expansion near Freeport Harbour

A debate is unfolding in the Bahamas regarding a proposed expansion by Bahama Rock Limited. The project involves the extraction of aggregate from approximately 269.39 acres of land adjacent to Freeport Harbour. An Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the program, which could span 15 to 20 years, outlines processes including demolition, blasting, dredging, and land clearing to eventually increase harbor turning space and deep-water berth capacity.

While the EIA suggests economic benefits such as the retention of 82 to 84 Bahamian employees and maintained aggregate supply, critics argue the decision is irreversible. Concerns have been raised regarding the permanent loss of the land's future utility and potential adverse effects on coral reefs, groundwater, pineland and coppice habitats, noise levels, and local communities. As an alternative, proponents have suggested the creation of a ‘Grand Bahama Harbour-Edge Innovation District’ focused on AI, business, technology, and finance.
