Bahamas Health System Struggles with Funding and Hospital Authority

The Public Hospital Authority (PHA) in the Bahamas has come under intense criticism after a series of alleged medical mishaps, including the deaths of a newborn and a mother at Princess Margaret Hospital, and reports of inadequate facilities such as a non‑functional kitchen and air‑conditioning failures. Critics argue the PHA is a hindrance to quality health care and call for reform or elimination of the agency.

At the same time, the National Health Insurance Authority (NHI) is facing financial strain as the number of beneficiaries and participating providers has outpaced its resources. Providers have complained of delayed payments, prompting threats to withhold services. NHI Chief Executive Officer Christy Butler said the Authority is working to diversify funding and improve communication with doctors and vendors. Prime Minister Philip Davis previously acknowledged bureaucratic glitches in the payment system.
