Bahamas implements utility reforms amid heatwave and water concerns
The Government of The Bahamas has announced a new overtime policy for Bahamas Power and Light (BPL) to address an unsustainable annual overtime expenditure approaching $20 million. The reform aims to improve financial accountability and workforce safety through new measures, including multi-level authorization for planned overtime, mandatory documentation for emergencies, and strict fatigue protections. These protections include relief planning after 12 continuous hours and a maximum limit of 16 continuous working hours.
Separately, rising temperatures in The Bahamas have increased water demand, prompting concerns regarding supply stability. The Water and Sewerage Corporation, which distributes approximately 12 million gallons of water daily, is monitoring weather patterns closely. Officials noted that El Niño is expected to bring below-normal rainfall to the region this season. While groundwater levels, particularly on Andros, have not yet seen a drastic impact, authorities remain vigilant regarding potential shortages.
