Bahamas imposes retroactive navigation fees on aircraft operators

The Bahamas Air Navigation Services Authority (BANSA) has begun issuing retroactive navigation fees to aircraft operators for flights that entered, departed, or overflew the country after May 1 2021. The charges apply to private and commercial flights, with exemptions for single‑engine piston aircraft, search‑and‑rescue, emergency medical missions, certain emergency landings and government or military flights. Rates have risen between 300 % and 700 % depending on the aircraft’s maximum take‑off weight, and operators who previously paid lower fees are now billed for the difference.

BANSA warned that aircraft carrying unpaid balances could be detained by Bahamian authorities, even after a change of ownership. The National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) is contesting the fees, launching an advocacy effort with U.S. officials and urging operators to share invoice details to assess the economic impact on airports, FBOs and the broader travel industry.
