Bahia construction sector warns Senate against abolishing 6x1 work schedule

Major representatives of the construction and real estate sectors in Bahia have issued an open letter to Brazilian senators expressing “deep concern” regarding a Proposed Amendment to the Constitution (PEC). The proposal seeks to abolish the 6x1 work schedule and reduce the weekly working hours from 44 to 40.

Signed by the presidents of SINDUSCON-BA, ADEMI-BA, and CRECI-BA, the document warns that implementing such a structural change without a prior increase in national productivity will cause severe economic consequences. The entities argue that reducing hours without corresponding salary adjustments acts as a direct shock to operational costs.

Key risks identified in the manifesto include: - Increased labor costs and inflationary pressure, which may be passed on to consumers, particularly affecting low-income families. - Financial strain on micro and small enterprises, potentially leading to business closures or a shift toward informal labor. - Risks of mass layoffs and reduced hiring capacity due to increased operational expenses. - Decreased external competitiveness for sectors focused on export and national industry.
