Bahia court blocks re-election bid of deputy Binho Galinha
The Bahia Regional Electoral Court (TRE-BA) has unanimously blocked the re-election bid of state deputy Kleber Cristian Escolano de Almeida, widely known as Binho Galinha. The decision follows investigations by the Federal Police suggesting Almeida leads a criminal militia involved in money laundering related to illegal gambling.
Almeida, a member of the Avante party, has been imprisoned since October of last year. In July, a criminal court in Feira de Santana sentenced him to more than 36 years in prison for crimes involving the illegal possession and tampering of firearms. The Electoral Public Ministry (MPE) successfully argued that his criminal history and alleged leadership in organized crime compromised the integrity of the democratic process and the voters' ability to make informed choices.
The ruling against Almeida is part of a broader trend in Brazilian elections. The MPE reports it has contested 1,020 candidacies nationwide this year, representing approximately 5% of all registration requests. Data from the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) indicates that 309 registrations have already been blocked, while another 829 are currently awaiting appeal decisions.
