Bahia defends regional dignity against economic and social stereotypes
The Regional Council of Economics of Bahia (Corecon-BA) and local commentators have issued responses to statements by Rodrigo Constantino that characterized Bahia as a “cancer of Brazil” and perpetuated stereotypes of laziness among its population.
Corecon-BA repudiated these remarks, emphasizing that political disagreements are part of democracy, but regional prejudice and attacks on the dignity of a people are not. To counter claims of indolence, the Council highlighted Bahia’s economic significance, noting it holds the largest economy in the Northeast. In 2023, the state's GDP reached R$ 431 billion, representing 3.9% of Brazil's total GDP, with preliminary projections for 2025 reaching approximately R$ 536.7 billion.
The state's productive structure is described as highly diversified, spanning agriculture, industry, mining, energy, and technology. Supporters of the region argue that reducing political voting patterns to a lack of instruction or character ignores the complex economic and cultural contributions Bahia has made to Brazil's national identity.
