Bahia establishes Serra da Chapadinha Wildlife Refuge

The Government of Bahia has officially established the Serra da Chapadinha Wildlife Refuge, a conservation unit covering 18,300 hectares in the Chapada Diamantina region. The decree, signed by Governor Jerônimo Rodrigues, aims to protect biodiversity, Atlantic Forest vegetation, and critical water sources, including the Una River, which is vital for the Paraguaçu river basin and the water supply of Salvador.

The creation of the refuge follows significant pressure from mining interests, illegal logging, land grabbing, and real estate expansion. The area is home to rare and endangered species and supports various local communities, including quilombolas and traditional riverside populations. By designating the area as a wildlife refuge, the state prohibits incompatible activities such as mining and hunting, while allowing for environmental research, education, and sustainable tourism.

Governor Rodrigues stated that the measure is intended to organize land use and minimize historical conflicts between environmental activists and mining companies. The administration expects the unit to foster sustainable economic development through tourism while ensuring the protection of the region's natural heritage.
