Bahia faces waste crisis as Roraima hits record low unemployment

In Bahia, a survey by the Public Ministry reveals that 388 out of 417 municipalities—approximately 93%—continue to use open-air landfills for waste disposal. Only 29 cities currently utilize proper sanitary landfills. This situation violates the National Solid Waste Policy and the New Sanitation Legal Framework, which set a deadline of August 2, 2024, for the end of irregular waste disposal. Open-air landfills pose environmental risks, such as soil contamination and groundwater pollution, due to a lack of leachate treatment and gas capture.

Meanwhile, in Roraima, the unemployment rate reached a historic quarterly low of 5% during the second quarter of 2026. The number of employed persons rose to 307,000, an increase of 12,000 compared to the same period in 2025. Additionally, the average monthly real income for workers in Roraima increased to R$ 3,568, marking the second-highest average income in the North region.
