Bahia Public Ministry denies rumors of renaming Elevador Lacerda

The Public Ministry of Bahia (MP-BA) has denied rumors regarding a potential name change for the Elevador Lacerda, a historic landmark in Salvador. The institution clarified that its current investigation is not aimed at renaming the monument, but rather at providing historical context and ensuring the right to information.

The investigation, launched by the 1st Human Rights Prosecutor's Office, seeks to examine the historical origins of the Lacerda family, specifically to determine if the wealth used to fund the 19th-century project was linked to the slave trade. The monument currently honors engineer Antônio de Lacerda and his family.
