Bahia State ordered to pay R$ 100,000 to investigator assaulted by police

A court in Bahia has ordered the state government to pay R$ 100,000 in moral damages to Adson Gomes Miranda, a Civil Police investigator who was assaulted by Military Police officers during the 2023 Carnival in Salvador.

The incident occurred at the Barra-Ondina circuit while Miranda was off duty. According to court findings, officers from the Shock Battalion used batons, punches, and kicks against the investigator. Medical reports confirmed that the assault resulted in the loss of four teeth, a facial fracture, and a left eye injury. The victim also required psychiatric follow-up following the event.

The judge rejected claims that the officers acted in self-defense or to break up a fight, citing a lack of evidence. The decision relied on a Military Police Internal Affairs inquiry, medical reports, and video footage of the assault. The state has also been ordered to pay 10% in attorney fees. The ruling is subject to appeal by the State of Bahia.
