Bahia's Cristópolis National Forest extinguished by new law
The Presidency of the Republic has sanctioned Law 15.508, which officially extinguishes the Cristópolis National Forest in Bahia. Originally created by presidential decree in 2001, the conservation unit was intended to cover approximately 30,000 hectares in western Bahia but was never effectively implemented.
The new legislation addresses what were described as irreparable legal flaws in the forest's creation. Technical reports revealed that the original demarcation used incorrect geographic coordinates, placing the area in the municipality of Baianópolis rather than the intended location. Furthermore, studies indicated the region lacked the ecological and forest attributes required to justify its protected status.
Senator Jaques Wagner, the project's rapporteur, noted that Ibama recognizes the error made 25 years ago. The overlap between the non-existent forest and private properties had caused significant economic issues, preventing local producers from accessing bank financing or making improvements to their land. The law aims to resolve this legal insecurity and stabilize the region.
