Bahrain human rights concerns submitted to UN Committee

Human rights organizations have submitted reports to the United Nations Human Rights Committee (HRC) ahead of Bahrain’s second periodic review under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR).

SALAM DHR submitted a document highlighting concerns regarding the erosion of international human rights standards in Bahrain. Key issues cited include discriminatory sectarianism, the mass stripping of citizenship from at least 69 individuals (including children) in April 2026, and the arbitrary arrest of Shi’a clerics in May 2026. The submission also notes restrictions on peaceful assembly, instances of torture—specifically citing the death of Mohamed al-Mosawi in custody—and the removal of elected parliamentarians.

Additionally, Americans for Democracy & Human Rights in Bahrain (ADHRB) provided a shadow report addressing seven thematic areas. This report emphasizes a lack of progress since the Committee’s 2018 observations, focusing on discrimination against Baharna and Ajam communities, the imprisonment of political leaders such as Hassan Mushaima, prison conditions, the death penalty, and environmental harm.
