Kuwait power and desalination plant hit by Iranian drone attack as US strikes continue

Iran launched a series of missile and drone attacks on Kuwait, striking a power generation and water‑desalination plant and igniting a large fire. The Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy said the blast damaged numerous generating units, forced activation of emergency plans and prompted immediate firefighting response. Kuwait’s air defence intercepted additional ballistic missiles and hostile drones over its airspace, and the country temporarily closed its international airport.

The attacks came amid intensified US‑Iran hostilities. The United States carried out the ninth consecutive night of airstrikes against Iranian targets, citing retaliation for recent attacks on US‑aligned forces. The conflict has also disrupted maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz: only four vessels crossed on Sunday, down from eight the day before, and LNG tanker transits have fallen sharply, creating a buildup of floating LNG storage in the Gulf.

Regional allies Bahrain and Oman reported sirens and a vessel fire near the Omani coast, while Kuwait and Bahrain confirmed they intercepted and destroyed multiple Iranian missiles and drones. The escalation threatens regional energy supplies and global oil trade, which relies on the Strait of Hormuz for about one‑fifth of world oil shipments.
